Looking Back at the Tombstone Industry

I originally posted this back in 2016 and it is even more relevant today then it was back then.

With the Covid Pandemic, the flood of new and "fly by" night tombstone manufacturers, and I use that term very loosely I might add. The importance of caring, quality and guarantees are more important than ever.

From me to you

I have been in this industry for 22 years now, and I have seen many changes.
I remember when we first opened the doors of a little known tombstone company called Forget me not Tombstones, when there were but a handful of big tombstone manufacturers in South Africa. I also remember when we were the first tombstone company to really embrace the wonderful world of the internet and the day our website went live for the first time.
From very humble beginnings to... well  that's just it we are still humble. And that is the difference.

I have seen many tombstone companies pop up all around the place - they last a few years, then they close shop or unfortunately vanish taking with them the hard earned money of their lay buy clients with them.
These types of people have no respect or understanding of what the tombstone industry should be about. But I am beginning to realise perhaps my ethos is unique in this industry.

 I have seen "mega" tombstone suppliers open up, where it is all about the cash, the flash and the bling. The bigger, the better, the more cash the more the splash.
Now call me old fashion, but I feel that a tombstone/ funeral service needs to about respect, about humility, about helping families remember their loved ones in a beautiful and dignified way. And remembering that we are in a very emotion driven industry, that we are dealing with families who are grieving and who are in various stages of this process. We do not merely sell a consumer product, we provide a service and as a tombstone business owner, we need to remember that it is an honour to be selected to assist the family who makes use of your services.

And that is why we only have one branch. I made that decision knowingly, not because I do not have aspirations of growing larger (which we have over the 122 years), but because my concern is that I do not want to loose that family atmosphere we have at our company. We believe in family, I want to engage with my clients, I get joy from being on the showroom floor, meeting clients, old clients popping in for a cup of coffee. If I have more branches to manage, the less engaged I feel I will become with people.  I want my clients to know if they want to see me, they know all they have to do is come to our showroom and they will find me there to assist them in away I am able.

In this world of technology and "faceless" communication, I feel we are moving a way from each other, we are forgetting how to connect with each other on a deep and personal level. Here at Forget me not Tombstones, we believe in making these connections with people.

We sit and listen to our clients, hear the stories of their loved ones, how they passed on, how they who are left behind are coping. Its not just a memorial, its so much more than that. I feel completely honoured to be apart of the process, to hear these stories. It is often so hard to find the words to describe to someone how it feels to do a tombstone for a family, because for me it truly is a gift.

That is why I have put a lot of emphasis on our Design LAB lately, I work closely with each client to create the perfect memorial that encompasses the love for a deceased family member.
From just an idea or merely one design component you wish to incorporate, I will create design options for you to have a look at. I will assist you every step of the way of the design process, from conception to reality.

Here at Forget me not Tombstones we pride ourselves in being open and honest to all our clients. Our mission is not only to provide a product, but to also provide an individual service to each customer. The work we do has the potential to touch many lives and we take that very seriously.

With the ever increasing competition in our industry and the escalation in fly-by-nights,  as well as a less than ideal economy, tombstone manufacturing has become a saturated market in South Africa.  As business owners we sometimes loose focus on our initial ethos when times become challenging. However, that is the exact moment when you need to hold onto your beliefs and business ethics. Those are the components that made you stand out from the crowd before, and created a large client base.

In the remaining six months of this year, we are refocusing all our efforts and attention to client care and service. As our motto says “Big enough to cope … Small enough to care.”  On a personal note, I have grown greatly as a person since being involved in this industry, and have made life long friends with many of my clients. A tombstone is not only a product to be scrutinised for quality and excellence , but it is the embodiment of the love a family has for a special person that has passed. Here at Forget me not Tombstones, we understand this and feel privileged that each one of our customer’s are selecting us to walk with them on this journey.

The design lab is going to be closely collaborating with our sales department  in order to fine-tune our client services we offer to the public. Natascha's Report on the Tombstone Industry

Wow! I can't believe it has been such a long time since I posted! This year has been flying and we have been doing many exciting things here at Forget me not Tombstones cc. Our designers have been burning the midnight oil coming up with beautiful creations for our clients Our sales team have been welcoming new customers and our reputation as a leading tombstone manufacturer is growing.

This year has brought a few changes in our industry, and as we here at Forget me not Tombstones always offer news,tools and advice on the tombstone industry, I have posted a report I have composed for you to read and become informed!

In the south African market we have unfortunately seen an increase in “fly by night” setups or new companies selling below grade / quality memorials.
There is no doubt that the Tombstone Industry is a difficult one to be in. Generally speaking the industry as a whole does not have a good reputation due
to  “fly by nights” which makes it more challenging for more established companies, such as ourselves, to re assure clients that we are a trustworthy,
 honest tombstone business. Our large client base, many years in the business and continuous recommendations makes us a leader in the tombstone industry.

Experiences we have heard from our clients are as follows:

- Approached in cemetery by someone, telling them they can give them a big memorial for cheap
- Taken to a residential address, not a showroom to see tombstones
- The stone that they were shown or purchased, is not what was installed on the grave. Or the stone is made up of thin pieces of granite (used for kitchen tops),
       polishing of the stone is very poor and general workmanship is shocking.
- When they confront the people, they are told that this is what they paid for, or they have disappeared.

How to avoid this happening to you

Always buy from a company that has a track record, ask to see their stones that they have installed.
A reputable company should also have a showroom that you are able to view a selection of memorials. Ask them how long they have been in business.
Do they have a webiste? Business cards? Is their company registered? Can they show you referrals?

These are all questions you can ask in order to safeguard your hard earned money and make sure you can feel safe in the knowledge
that they will deliver a high quality memorial.

      Over the years, I have realised that selecting a memorial is not only a very important decision to make, but the whole process is so important to the loved one’s
       of the deceased. So many clients have told me that the placing of a memorial has  helped them in the grieving process, be it in a big way or small way
       and I feel humbled each time someone tells us that we have helped  them in this way. I believe that we as tombstone manufacturers have to be compassionate,

Another year has flown past!
It has been a very busy year here at Forget me not Tombstones. We found ourselves doing many tombstones for around Africa, pushing the design envelope to meet client's requests and requirements.
The design lab has without a doubt been creating beautiful memorials the whole year. You will find many of these designs under our Design Lab tab as well as our New Tombstone Design tab on our website.

It has been a wonderful, challenging and exciting year here, and we look forward to the new challenges  2014 will bring. We have gone from strength to strength, we are very blessed to have grown in 2013. Thank you to everyone here at Forget me not Tombstones for the incredible work, enthusiasm, support and attention to detail.

Our factory is closed from the 13th of December 2013.

 Monuments Made for a Lifetime

Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy

Two of our co-owners Jonathan and Natascha Barry, went to Italy in September, and were absolutely mesmerised by the architecture and majesty of the historical sites in Rome. And most of all, the timelessness of the designs and how they have literally stood the test of time.

Not only did they have the most amazing time, but they also came back with a better understanding of stone and granite, and the possibilities in design

The availability of granite and marbles that the ancient romans had at there disposal is truly staggering, every corner of every church, has some intricate design that is crafted out of granite or marble, be it a huge granite column or a floor mosaic.  In the Vatican the carvings of granite are mind boggling and we both stood in awe admiring these works of art.

Impact on our Designs

It has opened up a world of creative possibilities for us, and are both extremely excited about the new designs that we are creating presently. The first installment is the Italian Collection,which is available on our website. As you will see the collection is based on historic Italian monuments.


Leaving a Legacy

The biggest impact I think for me personally, is how long these monuments have stood, generations have passed through the ages, and will continue to do so, but these stone buildings, carvings, monuments will still be here. In our industry we endeavour to create a monument for an individual, a place where generations of families can come and visit, where stories can be told, a place of reflection, of happiness, of love and sadness. I feel that a monument is part of the story of someones life, and being in Italy truly reminded me of the significance of this, and I feel humbled and honoured by what I do everyday.

I truly hope you feel blessed in your life, each and everyday.

Off to the Quarry

Large 3 metre saw cutting raw material into granite slabs

Just a few pictures of the quarry, where granite is cut into manageable pieces and shapes.
It was lovely to get out into the countryside with fresh air and wide open spaces. Working at the office in Johannesburg, I sometimes forget the sheer weight and size of the material we use to create beautiful, modern tombstones.

Large blocks from the quarry are cut down on the massive saws to create slabs which we are then able to cut, shape and polish into our tombstones.

The only way to move the granite when its in these kind of sizes is the use of forklifts

Diepkloof Square Business Expo - 16 June 2013

We were very lucky to take part in a small business expo at Diepkloof Square on the 16th of June 2013.
It started off being an incredibly cold and windy day, but as the sun warmed up, the weather improved.

The whole of the Forget me not Tombstones sale team was out in full force, with many cups of coffee to
keep the chill away we were all very excited to assist people with questions and inquiries.

We were very pleased to find that many people knew about our company and that we have  a good
 standing in the community. we were also pleasantly surprised to see some of our old clients!

We showcased a wide variety of statues,  bronzes, vases and a selection of photographs
 - glass and sandblasted that can be mounted onto any memorial.

With our full range of tombstone catalogues  with us as well as a informational brochure about our company, we were able  to assist many people.

It was a fun and busy day at the Expo,  and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. We are looking forward to participating in the next Expo.

What have we been up to?

Spring has been very busy here, with installations, invitations and memorial restorations. We have also been fortunate enough to offer a memorial to a family who lost their little angle, and our art department is currently busy working with them to create the perfect memorial for the. We will keep you posted on the progress.
Our vision is to be able to assist families in need throughout the year with a memorial for a loved one.
It is our way of making a difference and participating in the LEAD SA campaign.

We have also become a partner with Crime prevention Boards, and we are involved with them for the next year.

Our secret garden of our artificial flower service has really taken off. The quality and value for money of our arrangements and wreaths have been well received by our clients,and the department is going from strength to strength. Spring has Sprung!

The weather has definitely warmed up and its time to put the jerseys, coats and boots away and bring out the sandals and short sleeves!

This winter at Forget me not Tombstones has been incredibly busy and we have been pushing the design envelope again. From doing larger tombstones, mosaics, coloured engravings that are beyond anything we have done before to installing a beautiful "arty" tombstone.

New Little Angel Statue

We have searched for many months for a beautiful large angel to add to a child memorial or even for an adult tombstone. We have found this amazing angel which measures 50cm x 35 cm, we can leave it grey or we can paint the little angel to your requirements. We chose this angel because we feel it is just so serene and is not the traditional angels that are available. The price of this angel is R800.00 at the moment.

New Headstone Design Now Offered by Us!

We have been working on different  design options this winter, and we are excited to be able to offer you a stepped tombstone. Adding that something different to the memorial.

Our First Truly Abstract Tombstone

Our art department worked for months with our client to see there dream for this memorial come true.

this beautiful memorial is one of a kind. The striking sandblasted designs run from the main slab to the tiling around the tombstone creating one of the most elegant and abstract tombstone we have created.

We enjoyed this process immensely and look forward to more interesting and challenging designs!
